Mike Smith had a magic season this season. Its his seventh NHL season. How would you explain why this season came now and not with the Lightnings or Stars?

Mike Smith had a great year last season because in my opinion he worked extremely hard at all areas of his game and this gave him the confidence to be a consistent player. Mike has always had the ability to be a top goaltender in the NHL but he now plays a more efficient game and can make small adjustments when he needs to.

What changes have you and Mike worked with to make him one of the best goalies in the NHL last season? Changes in training, diet, mental training?

Mike is a very committed athlete who takes a great deal of pride in his fitness and conditioning. On the mental side of the game, we have focused on keeping positive and going into every game with a high energy level. In the course of a long NHL season, a top player needs to make a conscious effort to take really good care of himself on and off the ice.

What will you work with at the cap and start of season to give him the best conditions to be as good this coming season?

This season will be unique because of the long layoff. Without training camp and exhibition games there is the possibility that it will take time for goalies to get back up to speed. In Mikes case we will spend lots of time on the technical side of his game and try to get him back to feeling comfortable in the net as quickly as possible. Managing the schedule is an important factor in this type of season as well.

What do you think makes Mike such a great goalie?

Mike has all the makings of a great goalie. He is athletic, big, well conditioned, plays the puck better than any goalie in the league and works hard, competing every day.

How is Mike to work with both on and off the ice?

Mike is easy to work with because he has a desire to be the best. When athletes are committed to being great, they come every day and give their best.
